1- January 27 - Apollo 1: U.S. astronauts Gus Grissom, Edward White, and Roger Chaffee are killed when fire erupts in their Apollo spacecraft during a launch pad test.
2- February 5 - Lunar Orbiter 3 is launched.
3- April 20 - The Surveyor 3 probe lands on the Moon.
4- May 4 - Lunar Orbiter 4 is launched.
5- June 14 - Mariner program: Mariner 5 is launched toward Venus.
6- July 1 - The first colour television broadcasts begin on BBC2 in UK on certain programmes. A full colour service begins on BBC2 on December 2.
7- October 19 - The Mariner 5 probe flies by Venus.
8- 1st human heart transplant performed (Dr Christian Barnard, S Africa)
9- November 9 - Apollo program: NASA launches a Saturn V rocket carrying the unmanned Apollo 4 test spacecraft from Cape Kennedy.
